Impact of HIV / AIDS on lesbians
1985
?In terms of the analysis of
gay men as the ultimate power, men not needing women, the HIV / AIDS
crisis completely exposed the fact that gay men were not in a powerful
position at all. The thing that always struck me was that if HIV had
been transmitted through lesbian sex, I and most of the people I know
would be dead by now, because we were exactly at that time when
everybody slept with everybody else. (I remember catching scabies once,
it was all round Leicester and Birmingham, and you knew who?d been
sleeping with who by who?d got scabies, it was just awful). You can?t
maintain the moral high ground when you?re thinking actually you lot
are suffering what we could have been suffering if it had just been
slightly different circumstances, so HIV / AIDS changed that political
analysis radically?.
