What are STDs?
It has been proven that if you are gay, you are more likely to contract HIV/AIDS and other types of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. Some of you may be aware of the risks while some of you may be ignorant to the different types of diseases that you can contract.
How are STDs spread?
As stated in the name, these are diseases that are sexually transmitted. More specifically, genital secretions transmit chlamydia and gonorrhea while skin-to-skin contact with ulcers and sores transmit genital herpes and syphilis. Sometimes, you may be infected with an STD but you are not even aware because some STDs do not cause any symptoms. However, some do. If you notice any of the below symptoms, you should get tested immediately.
•Itching, burning, or pain around the opening of your penis during urination.
•Anal itching, soreness, and bleeding, or discharge.
•One or more sores on your penis.
•Painful blisters around your anus or genitals.
•Warts on your genital area
How and where can you get tested?
If you are gay, it is recommended that you get tested frequently. As stated above, some STDs do not have symptoms so you may be infected and you are not even aware. However, if you have any of the symptoms listed above, you must get tested immediately because you have most likely contracted an STD which may be completely cured, if you get treatments early. Almost all bacterial STDs such as syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia can be successfully treated using antibiotics; however, there is no treatment for viral STDs, such as genital herpes buy you can use antiviral medications to shorten or even prevent the outbreaks.
